First aider (Ersthelfer)

Also: Ersthelfer, betrieblicher Ersthelfer, workplace first aider

Definition

Workplace first aiders are employees trained in first aid who help with accidents and emergencies at work. In Germany, one first aider is required for 2 to 20 insured persons present; above that, 5 per cent in administrative and retail businesses and 10 per cent in other businesses.

Training comprises nine teaching units at a body authorised by the employers' liability insurance association; refresher training of nine teaching units is required every two years. The employers' liability insurance association bears the costs. The calculation is based on the people actually present – shift work, holidays and sickness must be taken into account.

First aid also includes first aid supplies according to DIN 13157 or DIN 13169, means of raising the alarm, a notice listing first aiders and emergency numbers, and documentation of every first aid treatment in the first aid log.
