GHS / CLP labelling
Also: GHS, CLP Regulation, hazard pictograms, GHS-Kennzeichnung
Definition
GHS is the globally harmonised system for classifying and labelling chemicals; the CLP Regulation is its implementation in the EU. It defines how hazardous substances are classified and labelled with pictograms, a signal word and H and P statements.
The nine hazard pictograms are red-bordered diamonds with a black symbol: exploding bomb, flame, flame over circle, gas cylinder, corrosion, skull and crossbones, exclamation mark, health hazard and environment. The signal word “Danger” stands for severe hazard categories, “Warning” for less severe ones.
The labelling on the container and in section 2 of the safety data sheet is the basis for the hazardous substances register, operating instructions and safety instruction. Containers that are refilled within the company must also be labelled.
