H and P statements
Also: hazard statements, precautionary statements, H-Sätze, P-Sätze
Definition
H statements (hazard statements) describe the hazards of a substance, for example “H315 Causes skin irritation”. P statements (precautionary statements) name safety measures, for example “P280 Wear protective gloves”. Both appear on the label and in the safety data sheet.
H statements are numbered by type of hazard: H2xx physical hazards, H3xx health hazards, H4xx environmental hazards. Particularly important are the statements on carcinogenic (H350), mutagenic (H340) and reprotoxic (H360) properties, which trigger stricter duties. P statements are divided into prevention (P2xx), response (P3xx), storage (P4xx) and disposal (P5xx).
In the operating instructions, H and P statements are translated into plain language. The full text of all H statements used in the safety data sheet is in its section 16.
