ASR (Technical Rules for Workplaces)

Also: Technical Rules for Workplaces, Technische Regeln für Arbeitsstätten, Arbeitsstättenregeln

Definition

The ASR specify the German Workplaces Ordinance with measurable requirements – for example illuminance (ASR A3.4), room temperatures (ASR A3.5), escape routes (ASR A2.3), fire safety (ASR A2.2) and safety signs (ASR A1.3).

They are published by the Committee for Workplaces. Anyone who complies with the ASR meets the ordinance; deviations must be equally safe. Frequently used values: at least 500 lux at office workstations, an air temperature of 20 degrees Celsius for light sedentary work, escape route width from 0.875 metres for up to 5 people, fire extinguishers according to floor area and fire risk, 5 per cent fire wardens.
