Workplaces Ordinance (ArbStättV)
Also: ArbStättV, Arbeitsstättenverordnung
Definition
The Workplaces Ordinance governs how workplaces in Germany must be set up and operated: rooms, traffic routes, escape and rescue routes, lighting, indoor climate, sanitary facilities and break rooms, as well as display screen workstations and telework stations.
The ordinance applies to buildings, construction sites and outdoor workplaces. Its annex contains the specific requirements, and the Technical Rules for Workplaces (ASR) add the figures – such as 500 lux for office work (ASR A3.4) or minimum widths of escape routes (ASR A2.3).
Since 2016, the Workplaces Ordinance has also contained the requirements for display screen workstations (Annex 6) and defines the telework station. The employer must carry out a risk assessment for workplaces (Section 3) and may only operate them if they meet the requirements.
