Hazardous substances register (Gefahrstoffverzeichnis)
Also: Gefahrstoffverzeichnis, chemical inventory, Gefahrstoffkataster
Definition
The hazardous substances register is the list of all hazardous substances used in the company with name, classification, quantity range, work areas and reference to the safety data sheet. It is mandatory under Section 6 (12) of the German Hazardous Substances Ordinance and must be accessible to employees.
The register includes all substances and mixtures with a hazard pictogram – including cleaning agents, sprays and small quantities – unless the hazard is negligible given the quantity and use. Useful additional information includes storage location and storage class, water hazard class, the version of the safety data sheet, available operating instructions and the result of the substitution check.
The register must be kept up to date: enter new substances, remove those no longer used and request safety data sheets regularly from suppliers. Software can read safety data sheets automatically and maintain the register from them.
