DGUV (German Social Accident Insurance)
Also: Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung, German Social Accident Insurance
Definition
The DGUV is the umbrella association of the German employers' liability insurance associations and public accident insurance funds. It publishes accident prevention regulations (DGUV Regulations), rules and information that are binding for insured companies or serve as the state of the art.
Alongside the state, statutory accident insurance is the second pillar of occupational safety in Germany. It insures employees against workplace accidents, commuting accidents and occupational diseases, advises companies and monitors compliance with accident prevention regulations through its inspectors.
The body of rules is tiered: DGUV Regulations (Vorschriften) are binding (for example Regulation 1 “Principles of prevention”, Regulation 2 on support by specialists, Regulation 3 on electrical installations). DGUV Rules and Information provide help with implementation; anyone who follows them can assume they meet the regulations.
