Also: Fachkraft für Arbeitssicherheit, Sifa, FaSi, safety engineer, safety officer
Definition
The occupational safety specialist advises and supports the employer in all matters of occupational safety. Every employer in Germany must appoint a Sifa in writing – internal or external – under the Occupational Safety Act and DGUV Regulation 2.
Sifas are safety engineers, technicians or master craftspeople with additional training from an employers' liability insurance association or a recognised provider. Their tasks under Section 6 of the Occupational Safety Act: advice on planning and procurement, support with the risk assessment, inspections, accident investigation, involvement in safety instruction and in the occupational safety committee. They are not bound by instructions in applying their expertise and act as advisers – responsibility remains with the employer.
The scope of support is governed by DGUV Regulation 2. Many small and medium-sized companies engage external Sifas or inter-company services.
