Explosion protection document (Explosionsschutzdokument)
Also: Explosionsschutzdokument, ATEX, explosion protection
Definition
The explosion protection document is the special documentation of the risk assessment for companies in which explosive atmospheres can occur. It sets out explosion hazards, zoning and protective measures and is mandatory under Section 6 (9) of the German Hazardous Substances Ordinance.
Explosive atmospheres are created by flammable gases, vapours, mists or dusts mixed with air – for example in paint shops, with solvents, in mills or wood dust extraction systems. The document defines where zones 0, 1, 2 (gases) or 20, 21, 22 (dusts) exist, which ignition sources are avoided and which devices may be used there (ATEX).
The inspection of installations in potentially explosive areas is governed by the Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health; an approved inspection body or qualified person inspects them before commissioning and then at least every six years.
