Noise area (Lärmbereich)
Also: Lärmbereich, noise exposure level, action value
Definition
A noise area is a work area in which the daily noise exposure level reaches or exceeds 85 dB(A) or the peak sound pressure level reaches or exceeds 137 dB(C). It must be marked, and hearing protection is mandatory there.
The German Noise and Vibration Ordinance has two action values: from 80 dB(A), the employer must provide hearing protection, inform employees and offer health checks. From 85 dB(A), hearing protection must be worn, the area is marked, a noise reduction programme must be drawn up and mandatory health checks arranged.
What counts is the level at the employee's ear over an eight-hour day, determined by measurement or calculation. Technical measures – quieter machines, enclosures, shielding – take priority over hearing protection.
